MIT has named Umar Saif as one of the world’s top young innovators for 2011.

We are all extremely proud of Umar who has brought glory to Pakistan several times in the past as well.By appearing on the TR35 list, he joins an elite group of researchers and technologists. MIT has in previous years recognized the likes of Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Larry Page & Sergey Brin of Google and Jonathan Ive, Chief Designer of Apple. Umar is the first Pakistani to have received this recognition.

LUMS today released the announcement making this news public.

Lahore, Pakistan – August 23, 2011 – Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) today announced that Dr. Umar Saif, Associate Professor at the School of Science of Engineering, has been recognized by MIT Technology Review as one of the top 35 innovators (TR35) in the world. In the last decade, this is the first time a Pakistani has been selected for the prestigious TR35 award.

“The TR35 recognizes the world’s top 35 young innovators that are radically transforming technology as we know it. Their work – spanning medicine, computing, communications, energy, electronics and nanotechnology — is changing our world”, according to MIT Technology Review.

Dr. Umar Saif has been honored for his work on technologies for the developing-world. Technologies developed by Dr. Saif’s research group and startups are used by Millions of people in the developing-world, especially BitMate, that enhances the speed of Internet in the developing-world using peer-to-peer technology, and SMSall.pk, Pakistan’s largest SMS Social Network which has sent close to 4 Billion SMS for users in Pakistan.

Dr. Umar Saif joins an elite group of researchers and entrepreneurs selected over the last decade. Previous winners include Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the co-founders of Google; Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook; Jonathan Ive, the chief designer at Apple; David Karp, founder of Tumbler; Harvard Professor Alán Aspuru-Guzik for his work on Quantum computers; and MIT Neuroscientist Ed Boyden, one of the inventors of the emerging field of optogenetics, which makes it possible to control neurons with light.

MIT Technology Review selects the top innovators after a rigorous evaluation process. The judges, who are leading experts in their fields from universities such as MIT, Stanford and Harvard, consider hundreds of high-impact researchers and entrepreneurs from all over the world, out of which top 35 are chosen for the award.

“This year’s group of TR35 recipients is driving the next wave of transformative technology and making an impact on the way we live, work and interact”, said Jason Pontin, editor-in-chief and publisher of the MIT Technology Review.

Dr. Saif has won numerous awards for his innovative technology solutions for the developing-world. He was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2009. He is a recipient of the MIT Technovator Award, Mark Weiser Award, Digital Inclusion Award from Microsoft Research and the IDG Technology Pioneer Award. Before moving to Pakistan, Saif worked at MIT and received a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust.

“We are immensely proud of this recognition for Dr. Saif and of how it reflects on the cutting edge work being done at our young School of Science and Engineering,” said Adil Najam, Vice Chancellor of LUMS. ”Dr. Saif’s work demonstrates not only the potential for innovation in technology for development but also the level of enterprise and expertise that already exists within Pakistan and the larger developing world.”

The Holy Quran on fasting

“O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you so that you may become righteous.

“The prescribed fasting is for a fixed number of days, but who so among you is sick or is on a journey shall fast the same number of other days; and of those who are able to fast only with great difficulty is an expiation – the feeding of a poor man. And who so performs a good work with willing obedience, it is better for him. And fasting is good for you, if you only knew.

“The month of Ramadhan is that in which the Quran was sent down as a guidance for mankind with clear proofs of guidance and discrimination. Therefore, whosoever of you is present at home in this month, let him fast therein. But whoso is sick or is on a journey, shall fast the same number of other days. Allah desires to give you facility and He desires not hardship for you, and that you me complete the number, and that you may exalt Allah for His having guided you and that you may be grateful.

“And when My servants ask thee about Me, say: I am near. I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he prays to Me. So they should hearken to Me and believe in Me, that they may follow the right way.

“It is made lawful for you to go in unto your wives on the night of the fast. They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them. Allah knows that you have been acting unjustly to yourselves, wherefore He has turned to you with mercy and afforded you relief. So you may now go in unto them and seek what Allah has ordained for you; and eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn. Then complete the fast till nightfall and do not go in unto them while you remain in the Mosques for devotion. These are the limits fixed by Allah, so approach them not. Thus Allah make His commandments clear to men that they become secure against all evil.” (2:183-187)

Blessings of the month of Ramadhanul Mubarak

Fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam. The word “Sawm ” (meaning to stop or abstain) is used in Arabic for fasting. A fast then means that one refrains from eating, drinking and other physical things (all those things that are otherwise allowed) from dawn to sunset. This month comes every year to spread the blessings and mercy of Allah. We are thankful to Allah for providing physical forms of divine worship such as prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage to improve our moral and spiritual condition.

Welcoming the Month of Ramadhan: The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has said: “The month of Ramadhan comes to you. This is a blessed month” (Kitab-ul-Saum). The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has declared this month as the “month of Allah” because one abandons all otherwise “lawful” things in the way of Allah. He has also declared this month as the “Chief of the months.” Worship during this month gains more blessings so one should fast with sincere intentions and worship should be performed to win Allah’s pleasure.

Ramadhan – Anniversary of the Holy Quran: Ramadhan is that blessed month in which the Holy Quran was first revealed to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). In this regard this month celebrates the birthday of the Holy Quran. To render our dues we should recite the Holy Quran as much as possible. During this month, at night, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) use to recite the Holy Quran in its entirety with the Angel Gabriel (Jibraeel).

Opening the doors to heaven: Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) has narrated that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When the month of Ramadhan starts, the doors of heaven are opened, the doors of the hell are closed, and Satan is put into chains” (Sahih Muslim Kitab-ulSaum). In this saying the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has promised a high place in heaven for one who observess the fast because a believer is enjoined to perform such deeds that please Allah and stay away from bad things.

Ramadhan’s Special relationship with Tahajjud Prayers: Hazrat Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “A person who gets up at night for Prayer and fulfills all requirements of his faith with an intention of receiving blessing during the Month of Ramadhan, is forgiven all his past sins.”

Charity during Ramadhan: Ibn Abbas relates that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, was the most generous of men and he was at his most bountiful during Ramadhan when Gabriel visited him every night and recited the Quran to him. During this period the bounty of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, waxed faster than the rain-bearing breeze (Bokhari and Muslim).

Prayers: Allah forgives all previous sins of a person who sincerely worships Allah during the month of Ramadhan. During this month Allah’s mercy and blessings are at their peak. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has said that during Ramadhan: “Allah says: ‘Is there anyone who calls on me so that I can accept his prayers? Is there anyone who asks for anything so that I can fulfill his desires? Is there anyone who asks for forgiveness so that I can forgive” (Sahih Bukhafi – Kitab-ul-Tauheed).

Last Ten days of Ramadhan: Hazrat Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that, during the month of Ramadhan, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to develop a new vigor, staying awake alI night and also waking members of his family for worship” (Sahih Bukhail, Kitab-ul-Saum). During the month of Ramadhan worship reaches its peak in the form of I’tikaaf (retirement for Allah’s worship). The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to retire to the Mosque in the last ten days of the Ramadhan. He would go to a corner in the Masjid-e-Nabwee (Prophet’s Mosque) to worship Allah in seclusion.

Ramadhan and Lailatul Qadr (Night of Decree): Hazrat Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “O Allah’s Prophet, if I know which night is the Lailatul Qadr then what should I pray? He replied: ‘you should pray: ‘O Allah, you are very forgiving and love those who forgive others. So bestow your blessings on me and forgive me”‘ (Jamiah Tirmidhi, Kitab-Al-Dawat). Lailatul Qadr is such a night that the Holy Quran has declared it to be better than a thousand months. May Allah enable us to be the recipients of Lailatul Qadr that we truly benefit from the coming month of Ramadhan. May Allah accept our prayers. Ameen.

Requirements of Ramadhan

The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has given guidance to the Muslims for each and every thing. He has given detailed instructions on when to start the month of Ramadhan and how to spend time during this month.

Beginning and Ending of Ramadhan: Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) has narrated that: “I heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying that you should start fasting when you see the moon for the month of Ramadhan and stop fasting when you see the new moon” (Sahih Bukhari, Kitab-ulSaum).

Forgetfulness while fasting: The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has said: “if some mistakenly eats while fasting he should complete his fast till the evening because surely Allah made him eat and drink” (Sahih Bukhari, Kitab-ul-Saum).

Importance of eating breakfast: Anas relates that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Take breakfast before the fast begins; there is blessing in breakfast” (Bokhari and Muslim), Zaid ibn Thabit relates: We ate breakfast during Ramadhan with the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him said: “The difference between our observance of the fast and that of the People of the Book is eating of breakfast” (Muslim).

Etiquettes of Sehri (food taken at dawn): Sehri is a blessed meal. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has said: “This is truly a blessing. One strengthens in oneself the habit of getting up early in the morning and to worship Allah and one can offer humble prayers to Him.” The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said: “Eat Sehri as there are blessings in eating Sehri” (Sahih Bukhari, Kitab-ul-Saum).

At time of Iftar (opening the Fast): There are some times during the day that are more helpful and assist in prayers being answered, Allah accepts more prayers when the fast is opened. In one saying the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has reported to have said: “No prayer is rejected at the time of the opening of the fast that is offered by someone who has been fasting” (Sunan Ibn Maja, Al-Abwab Al-Dawat).

Rewards of Fasting

Every act of goodness is rewarded. Rewards are given based on the sincerity of the intention. Fasting is the only worship about which Allah has said that He Himself is the reward for it. This means that one develops such a close relationship with Allah that Allah Himself becomes the helper.

Abu Hurairah relates that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Allah, the Lord of Honor and glory says: All other deeds of man are for himself, but his fasting is purely for Me and I shall reward him for it. The fast is a shield. When any of you is fasting he should abstain from loose talk and noisy exchanges. Should anyone revile him or seek to pick a quarrel with him, he should respond with: I am observing a fast. By Him in Whose hands is the life of Muhammad, the breath of one who is fasting is purer in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk. One who fasts experiences two joys: he is joyful when he breaks his fast, and he is joyful by virtue of his fast when he meets his Lord” (Bukhari and Muslim).

Sa’ad ibn Sahl relates that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “There is a gate of Paradise called Rayyan through which only those will enter on the Day of Judgment who are regular in observing the fast and no one else. A call will go forth: Where are those who observed the fast regularly? And they will step forth and no one beside them will enter through that gate. After they shall have entered, the gate will be closed and no one else will enter thereby” (Bokhari and Muslim).

Abu Sa’id Khudri relates that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “When a servant of Allah observes the fast for a day for the sake of Allah, He thereby repels the Fire from him a distance of seventy years of journeying” (Bokhari and Muslim).

Abu Hurairah relates that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “He who observes the fast during Ramadhan out of sincerity of faith and in hope of earning merit will have his past sins forgiven him” (Bokhari and Muslim).

Abu Hurairah relates that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “When Ramadhan arrives the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of hell are locked up and satans are put in chains” (Bokhari and Muslim).

Have a wonderful Ramadhan ahead . Do remember Us in Your Prayers.

Last night i was sitting with my friends at one of our usual haunts, the place was bustling with people as it usually does on saturday nights but there was something different, the crowd was noticably larger than usual and for want of a better word more ‘agitated’. The whole place was decorated with celebratory lights and miniature flags, young men were leaning against the doors of their tricked out rides with million watt amps blurting out patriotic tunes at full volume, adrenaline junkies of the local variety were pulling off bike stunts and the audience gathered around them was responding to their feats with a peculiar mix of ridicule and encouragement as only Pakistanis can. It was the scene of a typical 14th August celebration in Islamabad, smaller in size but identical in substance to many such celebrations held in all major urban centers across the country.

One of the songs being played out aloud was ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ which for many people of my age is a kind of chronological bookmark which identifies our childhoods and the music video marks our first visual contact with a guitar, drumkit, keyboards and bicycles with gears. The song reminded me of a time when I used to parade around with my friends every one of us sporting a multitude of patriotic badges bearing pictures of national heroes and some unflattering comments about our neighboring country. I truely believed that Pakistan was the greatest country on God’s green earth.

Sitting there I was surprised, surprised at the way my perception of our nation had evolved. I had come a long way from the boy who used to argue with his father when he criticized the way the cricket team was playing to the person who recognized the crowds before him as nothing more than a band of hooligans for whom 14 August was as good a day as any for getting rid of their bike silencers. It was not an epiphany that shaped my views rather a slow process of realization. One by one all the claims to greatness of our nation that my young mind had conjured failed the test of reality. I was struck by the observation that the fruits the motherland bestows upon a citizen are in direct relation to the size of the pocket of the citizen in question besides other variables like religious affiliation, ethnicity, caste and whether the citizen is carrying a weapon or not. The above observation holds true if the state considers you a muslim, the minorities only need to look at the national flag and notice ‘where’ the mast meets the fabric. I realized that there is a ‘slight’ variation b/w what Unity, Faith and Discipline mean in Pakistan Studies and what they mean in Pakistan. The Pakistan Studies version is very well documented and preserved for posterity, let me elaborate on the Pakistan version it is called Unity, Sect and Discipline.

Unity:

is good as long as it is our sect/ethnic group/caste that is united, the other sect/ethnic group/caste can only unite if it is assisted by zionist agents and thus their unity is detrimental to the national interest (which incidentally we united to protect in the first place) and a threat to national security.

Sect:

The only TRUE sect is MY sect the validity of the rest of the sects depends on their proximity to my sect. Difference beyond a certain level merits death!

Discipline:

Only for others not for me and my relatives, we are special!

I think young children untouched by bias and hate that their elders harbour for each other still love Pakistan but i fear ‘Pakistan’ does not love them back.

If you use Linux you most likely have heard of the init.d directory. But what exactly does this directory do? It ultimately does one thing but it does that one thing for your entire system, so init.d is very important. The init.d directory contains a number of start/stop scripts for various services on your system. Everything from acpid to x11-common is controlled from this directory. Of course it’s not exactly that simple.

If you look at the /etc directory you will find directories that are in the form rc#.d (Where # is a number reflects a specific initialization level – from 0 to 6). Within each of these directories is a number of other scripts that control processes. These scripts will either begin with a “K” or an “S”. All “K” scripts are run before “S” scripts. And depending upon where the scripts are located will determine when the scripts initiate. Between the directories the system services work together like a well-oiled machine. But there are times when you need to start or stop a process cleanly and without using the kill or killall commands. That is where the /etc/init.d directory comes in handy.

Now if you are using a distribution like Fedora you might find this directory in /etc/rc.d/init.d. Regardless of location, it serves the same purpose.

In order to control any of the scripts in init.d manually you have to have root (or sudo) access. Each script will be run as a command and the structure of the command will look like:

/etc/initi.d/command OPTION

Where command is the actual command to run and OPTION can be one of the following:

start

stop

reload

restart

force-reload

Most often you will use either start, stop, or restart. So if you want to stop your network you can issue the command:

/etc/init.d/networking stop

Or if you make a change to your network and need to restart it, you could do so with the following command:

/etc/init.d/networking restart

Some of the more common init scripts in this directory are:

networking

samba

apache2

ftpd

sshd

dovecot

mysql

Of course there may be more often-used scripts in your directory – it depends upon what you have installed. The above list was taken from a Ubuntu Server 8.10 installation so a standard desktop installation would have a few less networking-type scripts.

But what about /etc/rc.local

There is a third option that I used to use quite a bit. This option is the /etc/rc.local script. This file runs after all other init level scripts have run, so it’s safe to put various commands that you want to have issued upon startup. Many times I will place mounting instructions for things like nfs in this script. This is also a good place to place “troubleshooting” scripts in. For instance, once I had a machine that, for some reason, samba seemed to not want to start. Even afer checking to make sure the Samba daemon was setup to initialize at boot up. So instead of spending all of my time up front with this I simply placed the line:

/etc/init.d/samba start

in the /etc/rc.local script and Samba worked like a charm. Eventually I would come back and trouble shoot this issue.

Final Thoughts

Linux is flexible. Linux is so flexible there is almost, inevitably, numerous ways to solve a single problem. Starting a system service is one such issue. With the help of the /etc/init.d system (as well as /etc/rc.local) you can pretty much rest assured your service will start.
